Title: From 4D Machine Learning to 4D Printing: Research at the Intersection of Computation, Materials, and Manufacturing
Abstract:
This talk presents recent research at the intersection of 4D machine learning and 4D printing, highlighting how dynamic 3D data and programmable materials together open new possibilities for intelligent, adaptive manufacturing. By treating evolving 3D shapes as dynamic 3D point cloud time series, we develop modeling approaches that capture the full spatiotemporal behavior of physical systems. These representations enable richer prediction, monitoring, and control capabilities in 4D printing processes. Advances in stimuli-responsive materials, such as shape memory polymers, have created new opportunities for designing morphing structures, soft robotic components, and functional devices whose geometry evolves in response to external cues. Yet achieving precise and predictable shape transformation remains a central challenge. By combining dynamic 4D point cloud modeling with experimental and simulation studies of 4D printed structures, we explore how data-driven methods can enable transformative 4D printing applications by tightly controlling the interplay between process parameters, material response, and shape morphing.
Bio:
Dr. Michael Biehler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He earned his Ph.D. in 2024 from the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, following a B.S. and M.S. from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in 2017 and 2020, respectively. Dr. Biehler’s research lies at the intersection of multi-modal data fusion, 3D/4D machine learning, and advanced 3D/4D printing. He is dedicated to developing foundational methodologies, computational tools, and cutting-edge experimental platforms that advance these fields. His work has resulted in 17 publications in leading journals, earned seven best paper awards from INFORMS and IISE, and has been supported by 16 scholarships and fellowships from various professional organizations. His research has been funded by General Motors, among others.
